In the defense of Someone Great… This film was actually great!
Disguised as a break up story and friendship film, Someone Great is about the best person in your life… And that’s always you.
Setup in New York, the film bounces off between past and present, confronting its characters with life changing situations, and seeing them react to those changes in their friends lives, while trying to avoid their own personal demons. I absolutely love this film, for the soundtrack, and the solid leads, which manage to immortalize the struggles of millennial women in New York, juggling careers and personal lives, while also trying to remain true to themselves.
Someone Great is funny, heart-breaking, scary, but weirdly inspirational and full of hope.
For me, the breakout star of this film was always Lakeith Stanfield, with a certain vulnerability and stubbornness that also makes you care for his character. But he works so well in conjunction with Gina Rodriguez, I am absolutely invested in their relationship and every time I watch the film, I can’t help but root for them as a couple.
On the other side of Rodriguez’s Jenny are her best friends since college (or uni, depending on which side of the Atlantic you are), Erin (DeWanda Wise) and Blair (Britanny Snow). The trio has such different personalities, and yet they play so well on each other’s strengths, I am mesmerized every time they’re on the screen. To quote Erin
“I am deeply obsessed [with us] right now”.
Because the truth is, the girls make you part of their story and journey in such a natural way, it’s like you are part of the group and in the film. You’re there for the scary parts, and the cute parts, and especially through all the heartache.
And for all the people who dismiss chick flicks, they honestly don’t know what they’re missing. The courage to pick yourself up after going through pain, the struggle to be there for your friends while you’re dealing with a lot on your own, all of this was never better described and displayed than in the mess that are your late 20s and early 30s.
And if I can’t be grateful for much, at least I think I can be grateful for Someone Great introducing me to Lizzo. Pun intended.
